Pune District Holds First Ever Voting Awareness Rally for Transgender Community
Pune witnessed the first-ever voting awareness rally specifically for the transgender community. Led by District Collector Suhas Divase, the rally aimed to empower and educate approximately 700 transgender individuals about the crucial role they play in shaping democracy through active participation in elections.
The initiative, a collaborative effort between the district administration, the social welfare department, and various voluntary organizations supporting transgender rights, kicked off from Bhide Wada, Budhwar Peth Pune, and traversed through prominent areas like Mahatma Phule Mandai, Bajirao Road, and Vishrambaugwada before concluding at Vadgaonsheri.
During the rally, key figures such as Swachh Coordination Officer and Deputy Collector Archana Tambe, Assistant Commissioner of Social Welfare Vishal Londhe, and Professor Chetan Divan from the Karve Social Service Organisation, alongside representatives from Mitra Clinic and Mangal Mukhi Kinnar, graced the occasion with their presence.
Emphasizing the fundamental importance of citizens’ engagement in democracy, Divase underscored the significance of initiatives undertaken by the district administration to foster voter awareness. Notably, the drive included registering transgender individuals who were not yet enlisted as voters, showcasing a commitment to inclusivity and representation.
Tambe echoed Divase’s sentiments, urging transgender individuals to embrace their voting rights and actively participate in the democratic process. Londhe further encouraged them to contribute meaningfully towards the nation’s progress through their votes. A poignant moment during the rally saw Tambe administering the oath of voting to enthusiastic transgender participants, symbolizing their dedication to exercising their democratic rights.
