Pune District Sees Significant Rise In Voters: 11 Lakh Increase Since 2019
The Pune district has witnessed a remarkable growth in its voter base, with an increase of over 11 lakh voters since the 2019 Maharashtra state assembly elections. The total number of voters in the district now stands at 88 lakh, up from 77 lakh in 2019. This surge is attributed to the influx of citizens from various parts of the state and country, drawn to Pune for education, employment, and business opportunities.
According to Professor, a city urbanisation expert, Pune’s reputation as a major metropolis after Mumbai has made it an attractive destination for investment and growth. “Pune boasts ambitious projects like the Ring Roads, international airport, and metro, alongside a network of dams and rivers providing water security,” professor explained. “This has led to increased employment and migration to the city, reflected in the voter list”.
The data reveals a significant rise in women voters, particularly in urban areas. Hadapsar constituency has recorded the highest number of women voters at 2,59,146, while Pune Cantonment Board constituency has the lowest at 1,31,918.
The Pune district election branch has noted that the majority of urbanisation in Maharashtra is concentrated in Pune. This growth is expected to continue, driven by factors like employment guarantees, water abundance, and security .
As the voter list continues to expand, it underscores the importance of Pune as a hub for economic and social development in the region. With its growing population and increasing voter base, the city is poised to play a significant role in shaping Maharashtra’s future.
