In recent news from Pune, the police and Regional Traffic Office (RTO) have suspended the licenses of 300 motorists in the past week due to their reckless and negligent driving on the city’s roads. This measure is part of a larger effort to promote discipline and safety on Pune’s roads, and the police and RTO have also proposed suspending the licenses of an additional 250 motorists.

Pune Police Commissioner Retesh Kumarr has emphasized the importance of following basic traffic rules to ensure the safety of all drivers and pedestrians. To enforce this, the police will use the stringent provisions of the Motor Vehicle Act to punish motorists who drive recklessly and negligently on the roads, and will confiscate their licenses for suspension.

According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Vijay Magar, the police are invoking section 184 of the Motor Vehicle Act against motorists who violate rules such as driving on the wrong side, using modified silencers, drunk driving, violating no-entry or one-way rules, and carrying three passengers on a bike. The police collect visual evidence of the offences and record the driver’s license details. They then prepare a proposal with the offence details and send it to the RTO.

The police will only take strict action against those who deliberately break traffic rules and drive recklessly and negligently. The licenses of first-time offenders will be suspended for three months, six months for a second offence, and a lifetime suspension for a third offence. The initiative is aimed at reducing the number of fatal and minor accidents on Pune roads, as long as motorists follow traffic rules.

Online evidence will be maintained for the due course of action against offenders.
