Pune: Encroachments on Government Land Near Old Mutha Canal Ignored by Irrigation Department, Say Hadapsar Residents
Encroachments are rapidly increasing on government land adjacent to the Old Mutha Canal, and despite repeated requests from residents, the Irrigation Department has turned a blind eye.
Bela Vista Housing Society, located behind Annasaheb Magar Vegetable Market on Pune-Solapur Road within PMC limits, houses around 150 families. The society has piped gas connections, and for this, a gas plant has been constructed near the southeastern corner of the society alongside the protective wall, where large volumes of gas are stored.

To the south of the society lies the Old Mutha Canal. Between the canal and the society’s compound wall is open government land under the jurisdiction of the Irrigation Department. While part of the land has been used for tree plantation, unauthorized sheds and permanent structures are now being erected there.
This open area near the gas plant was deliberately kept free for safety reasons. However, in recent days, unknown individuals have encroached on this land and started illegal construction. If such structures are allowed, the area could be misused for unauthorized transport, posing a serious threat to the canal and the surrounding environment.
Repeated attempts have been made to inform the Irrigation Department through letters from the society, but no action has been taken so far. The ongoing encroachment is putting both the gas plant and the safety of society residents at risk.
Residents have strongly demanded that immediate action be taken to demolish the illegal construction and secure the premises to ensure the safety of the housing society.
