As Pune approaches the midpoint of the monsoon season, contrasting rainfall patterns have emerged across the city and its outskirts. While surrounding areas have seen substantial rainfall, Pune itself has experienced only sporadic showers, according to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD).

Despite fewer rainy days within Pune compared to its periphery, the city has surpassed its normal monsoon rainfall levels. From June 1 to July 16, Pune received 356.6mm of rainfall, which is 45% above the expected average for this period of 245.6mm.

This year, Pune has had 15 rainy days so far, witnessing intense convective showers on just two days,” the authority stated, highlighting significant rainfall events on June 5 (68.3mm) and June 9 (117.1mm).

However, the discrepancy between the number of rainy days and total rainfall has raised concerns among groundwater experts about effective recharge. Despite the overall surplus, concerns about uneven distribution and its implications on groundwater availability remain.

In response to rising water levels in dams like Khadakwasla and Panshet, authorities have issued alerts for possible water releases to prevent overflow. Civic authorities have activated disaster management plans, particularly in low-lying areas along Sinhagad Road, Bopodi, and Shivajinagar, anticipating potential risks associated with increased water flow into the Mutha river.

As the monsoon progresses, authorities continue to monitor water levels closely, ensuring preparedness for any contingencies arising from continued rainfall.
