Pune, July 7, 2026: A bill issued by Chafa Café and Studio in Koregaon Park has triggered a debate over transparency in restaurant billing after a customer was charged an additional 7% “Gas Crisis Charge” on food and beverages.

RTI activist Praful Sarda noticed the surcharge while paying for two Moroccan Mint teas, a hazelnut hot chocolate, and mozzarella cheese garlic bread. Questioning the continued levy despite a decline in commercial LPG prices over recent months, Sarda has filed a complaint with the Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA), seeking an inquiry into the practice.

Consumer rights experts have pointed out that any additional charges imposed by restaurants should be clearly communicated to customers before they place their orders. They stressed that diners should be informed in advance about any optional or mandatory surcharge to ensure transparency and avoid billing disputes.

Responding to the issue, Chafa Café and Studio told Pune Mirror that the “Gas Crisis Charge” is voluntary and is removed or refunded whenever a customer raises an objection. The café also stated that it intends to discontinue the surcharge on future bills.

The incident has reignited discussions on fair billing practices and the need for greater transparency in restaurant pricing.
