Pune : Fire erupts at Baramati garbage depo results in loss of Rs 80 lakhs

Pune: A massive fire erupted at a garbage depot in the wee hours of Thursday at Baramati. The blaze caused significant damage to various waste sorting systems and the trash itself. As per the information provided, the estimated financial loss is expected to be approximately Rs 80 lakh.

As per the information received, Municipal Chief Officer Mahesh Rokde and other officials are currently determining the cause of the fire. Upon receiving the report of a fire at the garbage depot around 2 a.m., the civic staff immediately responded and rushed to the scene. Firefighters from Baramati Municipal Council, MIDC, Chhatrapati Cooperative Sugar Factory, Malegaon Cooperative Sugar Factory and other organizations arrived promptly and attempted to extinguish the flames. 

Furthermore, the fire was extremely intense, destroying seven to eight waste segregation machines belonging to Baramati Municipality and Luco Company. Preliminary estimates indicate that approximately 900 tonnes of segregated waste were also consumed by the fire, resulting in a loss of about Rs 40 lakh. Additionally, the garbage system itself suffered a loss of around Rs 25–30 lakh. 

Although security was present at the spot and the civic body had installed a CCTV system. According to sources within the civic body, there is a strong suspicion that the fire was deliberately set by some miscreants. A thorough investigation will be conducted in this case.
