Pune, April 9, 2026: Panic gripped Pune on Tuesday when a suspected rabid dog attacked five people near Mhatre Bridge on DP Road. All victims were bitten and sustained injuries before being rushed to Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital for treatment. The incidents occurred in quick succession, causing concern among local residents.
The Municipal Veterinary Department launched a search operation and captured the dog in the Mahalaxmi Lawn area. However, the dog died shortly after being taken into custody. Unfortunately, no samples were collected post-mortem, leaving it unclear whether the animal was actually rabid.
All five victims are currently receiving medical care, including anti-rabies vaccine (ARV) treatment.
Authorities have urged citizens to remain vigilant and report stray or aggressive dogs immediately to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Dr Sarika Funde, veterinary department head, Pune Municipal Corporation told Pune Pulse that measures have been taken after the incident was reported.
