Pimpri, April 22, 2026: The Maharashtra government is set to establish a dedicated “IT Study Cell” to tackle growing concerns among IT professionals, including job insecurity, layoffs, and issues faced by freshers across IT hubs such as Hinjawadi.

The move follows efforts by Chinchwad MLA Shankar Jagtap, who raised these concerns at the state level, bringing the matter to the attention of senior leadership. A high-level meeting with Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis is expected soon to discuss concrete measures for the sector.

Earlier this week, a joint meeting was held at the Mantralaya under the chairmanship of Labour Minister Akash Fundkar, where multiple issues affecting IT employees were discussed. Jagtap presented key grievances, highlighting the lack of legal protection and increasing instances of unfair layoffs.

Responding positively, the Labour Minister directed officials to set up an expert-led IT Study Cell. This body will focus on drafting sector-specific regulations and ensuring effective implementation to safeguard the interests of IT professionals.

Senior officials from the labour, industry, and IT departments, along with representatives from employee groups, attended the meeting. Discussions also included proposals to clearly define IT employees under existing labour laws and extend protections under the Industrial Disputes Act.

The proposed study cell will examine ways to regulate layoffs, address workplace grievances, and improve compliance with employee welfare norms. There were also deliberations on setting up a dedicated IT tribunal or a fast-track labour court to ensure quicker resolution of disputes.

Additionally, measures such as ensuring post-retirement benefits through EPFO, stricter monitoring of workplace safety committees, and curbing abrupt terminations and blacklisting practices were discussed.

Labour Minister Fundkar indicated that a specialised IT tribunal or fast-track mechanism could be established by June to expedite grievance redressal for IT workers.

MLA Shankar Jagtap emphasised that while the IT sector significantly contributes to the state’s economy, the challenges faced by its workforce cannot be overlooked. He stated that coordinated efforts between the labour, industry, and IT departments are underway to bring IT professionals under stronger legal protection.

The proposed initiatives are expected to bring relief to thousands of IT employees in Pune and other technology hubs, as the government moves towards creating a more structured and secure working environment in the sector.
