Recently, a Software Engineer in the IT sector, residing in the Kalyaninagar area of Pune City fell prey to Cybercrime.

This crime took place almost a month ago. The victim was currently without a job back then and was looking for a job. He therefore applied for a job-based in New Zealand on an online website. The fraudster then asked for money from the victim from time to time.

The fraudster took money saying that the money was needed for several formalities for the victim to come to New Zealand such as visa, passport, character certificate verification, etc. The fraudster took money from the victim for straight 25 days and took a total of 13 Lakhs.

Ashalata Kapre Police Inspector Crime, Yerwada Police Station, said, “Cyber awareness is extremely important. With crimes increasing day by day in Pune, the public needs to realise to not fall prey to such fraudsters. It is mostly well-educated people or retired people who become the victims of such Cyber frauds. People use digital platforms but they must use it cautiously. Most of the people know that links are not supposed to be clicked on but they still do, leading to mobile mirroring. When people search for job opportunities frequently on Google, the hackers get the information.”

She further added, “The public should realise that a vegetable vendor won’t give us anything worth Rs. 2 for free, so why will anyone in the world do it for us? Therefore, people should be aware.”

A new Cyber fraud which is taking place in Pune City is that the victims get messages that Rs XXX have been transferred to their account. After this message, the victims receive a call saying that the money has been transferred by mistake and to transfer it back. The victims without checking the details, transfer the money back, though the reality is that no such money has ever been transferred. Then the victim gets another call to send more money as the fraudster is facing some health crisis. Many people give in to such cyber crimes and transfer money.
