A special motor vehicle court in Pune, presided over by Judicial Magistrate First Class Amrit Birajdar, has sentenced a software technician to seven days of simple imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 for driving under the influence of alcohol. This is the second time the accused has been convicted for the same offense.

The prosecution stated that in December 2024, around 2:00 PM at Wakad Naka Chowk in Pimpri Chinchwad, police observed Manmohan Baleshwar Tyagi, a 45-year-old resident of Pimple Saudagar, riding his motorcycle while intoxicated. The Wakad police filed a case against him under the relevant sections of the Motor Vehicle Act, highlighting that his reckless driving endangered public safety.

During the court hearing, Tyagi admitted his guilt and pleaded for a lighter sentence, explaining that he is the sole provider for his family and works in an information technology company. “If I am sent to jail, I could lose my job, which would put my family in financial trouble,” he told the court.

However, Assistant Public Prosecutor Varsharani Jadhav argued that the case should serve as a warning to others, stressing that reckless driving under the influence has caused numerous fatalities and endangers innocent lives.

Magistrate Birajdar noted that since Tyagi was a repeat offender, a fine alone would not be a sufficient punishment. The court emphasized that his previous conviction had not deterred him from committing the same offense again. While considering the financial impact on his family, the judge ruled that a brief jail term was necessary to uphold justice and prevent future violations.
