Residents of Kalyani Nagar in Pune continue to voice their concerns over the persistent problem of noise pollution caused by various restaurants in the area. Despite their repeated efforts to seek resolution, their complaints have fallen on deaf ears, leaving them frustrated and disappointed. Recently, residents received a message from the Yerwada Police Station, requesting their presence at Ramwadi Police Chowky to close all noise pollution complaints on June 2nd.

However, residents were met with disappointment when they arrived at the police station on Saturday morning and again on Sunday, June 3rd and 4th, only to discover that the police officials were on leave and there was no one available to address their concerns at Ramwadi Police Chowky. This lack of responsiveness from the authorities, coupled with the absence of concrete action to curb noise pollution, has deepened residents’ frustration.

Residents of both Kalyani Nagar and Wadgaonsheri have been grappling with the issue of noise pollution caused by establishments such as Elrow Club, Unicorn House, Elephant & Co, Happa, Pergola, Cobbler, and Crew, to name a few. In an effort to raise awareness and put an end to the problem, Team Swachh Kalyani Nagar (TSKN) and Koregaon Park Residents Welfare Association (KPRA) organized the Voice Against Noise campaign on March 19th. The campaign aimed to emphasize the right to a peaceful environment and the right to sleep, which are fundamental rights enshrined in Article 21 of the Indian Constitution.

Residents assert that the incessant noise generated by these nightclubs not only affects senior citizens and children, hindering their sleep and concentration but also violates their personal space. The long-standing issue of noise pollution has taken a toll on the health of residents, leading to sleep disorders, headaches, anxiety, high blood pressure, and other related problems. Despite repeated promises of action from the authorities, there has been little tangible progress in addressing the issue, leaving residents with zero tolerance for such noise pollution.

Residents have taken to Twitter to express their grievances, alleging that the police have made promises of action but have failed to follow through. One resident highlighted that the problem extends beyond Kalyani Nagar and affects other areas of Pune as well. The joint efforts of Team Swachh Kalyani Nagar, Wadgaon Sheri, and Koregaon Park Resident Association aim to put an end to this nuisance caused by nightclubs. Moreover, these establishments contribute to traffic congestion as their patrons often park their vehicles on the roadside. The unruly behavior of the crowd leaving these nightclubs further exacerbates the issue, with loud music playing in cars and instances of public intoxication that attract anti-social elements. The pubs operate until 5 AM, resulting in traffic jams and late-night honking, further disturbing the residents’ peace.

Despite previous promises, the nightclubs have failed to implement soundproofing measures, compounding the problem for the residents. The mounting number of complaints from residents of Kalyani Nagar highlights the failure of the police in maintaining law and order in the area.

Residents now pose several pressing questions that demand answers from the authorities.

First, they want to know what concrete action has been taken by the police to address the issue of noise pollution and why the problem persists despite complaints.

Second, they question why the police have been unable to enforce an earlier closure time of 1:30 AM for nightclubs, allowing them to operate until 5 AM instead.

Lastly, residents are concerned about the lack of strict action against repeated violators and why they themselves receive show cause notices instead. These queries underscore the residents’ growing frustration with the inadequate response to their valid concerns about noise pollution in Kalyani Nagar.
