In response to increasing instances of tax evasion and misuse, the State Transport Department has introduced significant revisions to the rules governing the ‘BH’ series of vehicle registration. The move comes as a response to a surge in government tax evasion through the utilization of ‘BH’ series registration numbers, primarily by individuals who frequently relocate across state borders due to employment.

Initially launched by the Union Transport Department in 2021 to alleviate the burden of repeated state road tax payments during inter-state transfers, the ‘BH’ series had provided substantial benefits to government and private employees. However, the lax regulations surrounding its use led to widespread exploitation, prompting authorities to take action.

Under the revamped rules, stringent measures have been implemented to ensure transparency and prevent abuse. Notably, individuals seeking registration under the ‘BH’ series must now provide proof of their previous state of residence and furnish payment documentation. Furthermore, the privilege of utilizing the ‘BH’ series will be limited to a single vehicle per person, eliminating the practice of registering multiple vehicles under one name to evade taxes.

To further clamp down on fraudulent activities, vehicle owners are now required to demonstrate the legitimacy of their vehicle purchase through bank transactions or loan documentation. Additionally, individuals owning vehicles exceeding specified value thresholds are subject to rigorous financial scrutiny to ascertain their ability to afford the purchase legitimately.

Sanjeev Bhor, the Regional Transport Officer (in-charge), emphasized the importance of these measures in safeguarding government revenue and ensuring fairness in vehicle taxation. He stressed the need for strict enforcement to deter future instances of exploitation and uphold the integrity of the ‘BH’ series registration system.

With these proactive measures in place, the State Transport Department aims to stem the tide of tax evasion and uphold the principles of accountability and equity in vehicle taxation. The revised regulations signify a renewed commitment to combatting fraudulent practices and preserving the integrity of the transportation sector.
