Pune Metro collects a revenue of more than Rs 3 crore in August

Pune: Ever since the inauguration of the extended Metro Line on August 1, 2023, by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Pune Metro has collected a total revenue of Rs 3 crores in August. 

The extended metro line connects Phugewadi to the Civil Court and Garware to Ruby Hall Clinic. This new route spans a distance of 11.5 km and includes eleven stations: Deccan Gymkhana, Chhatrapati Sambhaji Park, PMC, Civil Court, Mangalwar Peth, Pune Railway Station, Ruby Hall Clinic, Dapodi, Bopodi, Shivajinagar, and Civil Court (underground).

As per the information provided, after 5 p.m. on August 1, a significant number of passengers began using the extended route. Throughout the month, more than 2 million trips were made by Pune residents, with an average of over 65,000 journeys per day between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m.

The metro saw particularly high ridership on Saturdays and Sundays, with over 100,000 passengers travelling every Sunday. The busiest day in August was Independence Day, with 169,512 passenger trips recorded. In total, the metro generated a monthly revenue of more than Rs. 3 crore between August 1 and August 31.

 It is worthy to note that among the metro stations, PCMC recorded the highest number of passengers on the PCMC to Civil Court route, with 200,003 passengers. The lowest number of passengers, 10,432, was recorded at Kasarwadi station. On the Vanaz to Ruby Hall Clinic route, the highest number of trips, 153,235, was recorded at Vanaz station, while the lowest number, 20,512, was recorded at Ideal Colony station.

Additionally, in terms of ticket sales, 53.41% of Pune residents purchased tickets electronically, while the remaining 46.59% bought paper tickets with cash. Of those who bought paper tickets, 86% purchased them from ticket windows and 14% from metro kiosks. Among digital ticket buyers, 68% purchased tickets via mobile, 8% through Metro Card, 23% through kiosk machines, and 1% through TOM (Ticket Operating Machine). Approximately 27% of passengers opted for return tickets. The ‘One Pune Card’ was initially provided to the first 15,000 people free of charge, and 11,000 cards have already been sold. Subsequently, the card will cost Rs. 177.

Currently, there is a 30% discount on weekend fares for metro commuters, as well as a 10% daily discount for card users. Students up to graduation get a 30% fare concession, and a special card for Pune metro students will be introduced soon.

During the inauguration, Shravan Hardikar, Managing Director of MahaMetro added, ‘The metro has significantly contributed to the improvement of Pune’s public transportation system. He further mentioned that PMPML and Metro will continue to collaborate to expand the feeder bus services to more routes.’ 

Hemant Sonawane, Pune Metro’s PRO, added, ”Pune Metro received a good response. Between August 1 and August 31, Pune Metro reported 20,40,484 passenger trips up to 4 pm collecting a revenue of more than Rs. 3 crores.”
