Maha-Metro has secured an annual comprehensive insurance policy for all users of Pune Metro lines 1 and 2, marking a first for the city’s public transportation system. The benevolent move is being made at a moment when the average daily traffic on the two lines surpasses 70,000.

The policy covers medical costs resulting from mishaps or injuries incurred while commuting via metro as well as accidents, incapacity and death brought on by unforeseeable events.

Under the Pune Metro Rail Project’s money insurance and group personal accident policy, the company has insured ₹4 lakh for death and ₹2 lakh for permanent disability. It covers all passengers who are present in a Pune metro building or station, on a train, or anywhere on the station grounds, including paid and unpaid areas of the metro station building, and who have a valid ticket, pass, smart card, QR Code and valid permission (apart from areas where the ticket is exempt).

Additionally, the policy has guaranteed ₹1 lakh in cash for theft and break-ins at 24 metro stations. The insurance policy is in effect for the period of 31 March, 2024 to 30th March, 2025.

In addition to insurance, Maha-Metro has agreements with about 28 urban hospitals covering the costs of hospitalisation and outpatient care for injuries or accidents that occur during commuting. A few days ago, MP Srirang Appa Barne had announced the extension of the metro facility to Pimple Saudagar. Pimple Saudagar, which was originally left out of the project’s first phase, will now have access to the Metro facility.

Barne was enthused about the area’s rapid growth, particularly in light of the upcoming completion of the Pimple Saudagar–Wakad Metro route. This expansion has the potential to bring in a new era of advancement and prosperity by improving connectivity and boosting the local economy.

Commuting is a challenge in Pune city for residents, hence expansion of the metro connectivity will give way for an easier and cheaper means of transport.
