According to the activists, a complaint was lodged at the Yerawada police station against a doctor and his colleagues. Dadasaheb Gaikwad, known for aiding destitute patients, shared that he had admitted an injured and homeless individual to Sassoon Hospital a year and a half ago. However, upon visiting the next day, he discovered the patient had vanished. Investigations revealed that the patient was taken away at night by a doctor and never returned, raising suspicions about the hospital’s treatment of orphaned patients.

In a bid to expose this malpractice, Ritesh Gaikwad monitored the hospital at night. At 1:30 a.m. on a Monday, a doctor approached him, inquiring if he could help remove a patient. The doctor allegedly offered Ritesh 500 rupees to take the patient far away from the hospital so they wouldn’t return.
As instructed, a patient with severe injuries and missing both legs was placed in Ritesh’s rickshaw by hospital staff. The patient, still with a needle in his hand, was driven to a banyan tree in Vishrantwadi, where the doctor abandoned him in the dark and rain.
Ritesh quickly alerted the police, and with Dadasaheb Gaikwad’s assistance, the patient was readmitted to Sassoon Hospital. A formal complaint was filed at Yerawada police station, resulting in a case being registered late at night.
Dadasaheb Gaikwad expressed grave concerns over the mistreatment of destitute patients at Sassoon Hospital. He emphasized the need for an inquiry to prevent recurrence of such incidents, stating, “Destitute patients are not getting proper treatment in Sassoon Hospital. Instead of treating them, doctors are leaving them to die. This is very serious.”
Ritesh Gaikwad echoed his concerns, highlighting the detrimental impact on medical care, “This malpractice tarnishes the integrity of medical care. If doctors themselves are doing this, where should patients go? How will poor and destitute patients get justice?”
The activists called for a thorough investigation into the hospital staff involved and an assessment of how many such patients have been abandoned to date.
This alarming situation at Sassoon Hospital demands immediate attention and action to ensure the safety and proper care of all patients, regardless of their socio-economic status.
