Residents residing near Nyati Chesterfield and Nyati Windchimes in Undri area have raised serious concerns about mosquito breeding in an amenity space currently occupied by Ryan International school. The plot, which served as an open amenity space, has now become a hotspot for mosquito breeding, potentially leading to an increase in dengue and other mosquito-borne diseases.
Sunil Aiyer, a local resident, highlighted the gravity of the situation, stating, “There are issues of mosquito breeding leading to possible dengue in the plot behind Chesterfield & Windchimes. This is a serious concern given the rise in Zika and dengue cases in Pune.”
When Pune Pulse contacted Hemant Kirulkar, Assistant Municipal Commissioner (AMC) Pune, he assured prompt action. “We are determined to take action against those whose actions pose a threat to civilian life. We are sending our team for inspection. If we find any traces of mosquito breeding or water logging on the land, we will take strict action against the responsible firm,” Kirulkar affirmed.
Another resident of a neighbouring society informed that PMC must conduct surveys in societies and penalise those found flouting norms. There are many construction sites around posing great health concerns for many living around. There are over 14 schools in the vicinity and PMC must check the spots around the school too.
S Thombre, an officer with the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) health department, also spoke to Pune Pulse, stating, “We are immediately taking action and spraying medicines to reduce mosquito breeding if found after inspection.”
Despite the assurances, residents remain skeptical about the authorities’ commitment. A resident remarked, “I am shocked at the apathy shown. Payment is being demanded for carrying out necessary spraying! If civic authorities refuse to do the necessary spraying and allow dengue to spread, it’s rather shameful.”
The open area behind Nyati Chesterfield and Nyati Windchimes is not only prone to mosquito breeding but also accessible to cattle and, recently, horses, adding to the health hazards. Residents have urged the authorities to request the school authorities to secure the portions where the sheets are missing to prevent further intrusion and stagnation issues.
Additionally, there is water stagnation in the labor camp of the developer behind Nyati Chesterfield, exacerbating the mosquito breeding problem. The residents hope that swift and effective action by the civic authorities will mitigate these health risks and ensure a safer living environment.
