Pune, June 29, 2025: A political storm has erupted over the proposal to rename Pune Railway Station. BJP MP Medha Kulkarni suggested naming the station after Maratha warrior Peshwa Bajirao, sparking widespread debate and backlash.

During a divisional railway meeting, Kulkarni proposed the name change, but her suggestion drew criticism and trolling on social media. Various groups also jumped into the fray, suggesting alternative names such as Mahatma Jyotiba Phule and Rajmata Jijau. Protests followed, with opposition growing against Kulkarni’s proposal.

In response, provocative banners appeared across Pune. One such banner, put up by the Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray faction), read:
“If the Kothrud lady is so obsessed with renaming, then rename Budhwar Peth to Mastani Peth!”
This was a pointed reference to the area known for its red-light district, and linked to Mastani, Bajirao’s companion—making the statement especially controversial.

Reacting emotionally, Kulkarni said, “I only suggested a name—anyone can voice their opinion. Criticism is fine, but there must be limits. Is it right to suggest naming Budhwar Peth after Mastani?” She broke down in tears while condemning the vulgar tone of the banners.

She emphasized that the final naming decision lies with authorities, and while she had submitted a proposal, the derogatory and offensive comments made against her were unacceptable. “People must be punished for such obscenities. There should be a line, especially when addressing a woman,” she added, visibly upset.
