Pune : MP Shrirang Barne Calls for Immediate Action to Prevent Pollution of Pavana and Indrayani River
In a significant move, Maval constituency Member of Parliament Shrirang Barne has directed the authorities to take immediate steps to prevent pollution of the Pavana and Indrayani rivers, which flow through Pimpri-Chinchwad city. Overflow drains, scattered across various locations between these two rivers, have been identified as the major contributors to river pollution. Barane, representing Shiv Sena, has proposed that the drains originating from the river’s source be blocked, and only treated water should be released into the rivers.
To address this pressing concern, a meeting was held with Municipal Commissioner Shekhar Singh, PMRDA Commissioner Rahul Mahiwal, and other officials. The gathering was joined by representatives from Dr. Jaladindi Foundation, Citizen Forum, and concerned citizens, including Vishwas Yevle, Rajeev Bhavsar, Suryakant Muthiyaan, Omkar Giridhar, Tushar Shinde, Sandeep Mali, Dhananjay Bhatkande, and Ravi Ulangwar.
MP Barne emphasized that the direct discharge of untreated sewage into the rivers must be halted at the source. He called for comprehensive public awareness campaigns in every village along the river, involving the sarpanch, members, gram sevaks, and schools, to highlight the importance of river cleanliness. Additionally, he stressed the need for sewage treatment within the municipal and PMRDA limits. Discussions will also be held with the Collector regarding water treatment in areas where the river basin is affected, such as Talegaon Dabhade and Dehu Road Cantonment Board.
The discharge of effluents from MIDC industries directly into the river basin was also addressed. Barane announced plans to meet with Industry Minister Uday Samant, urging him to instruct relevant authorities to treat the water within the MIDC. Recognizing the urgency of the matter, regular monthly meetings will be conducted to review progress and take necessary action to restore the health of the Pavana and Indrayani rivers. MP Barane expressed his commitment to working tirelessly towards achieving this resolution, aiming to set an inspiring example for the entire nation.
