In Western Maharashtra, encompassing Pune, Satara, Solapur, and Sangli, the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) has issued a stern warning to consumers failing to settle their electricity bills. A staggering 17.85 lakh individuals have defaulted, leading to a cumulative pending amount of ₹ 332.79 crore.

Specifically, Pune shoulders a significant burden, with 8.58 lakh consumers owing ₹209.36 crore in arrears. In Solapur, 2.59 lakh consumers have outstanding payments totaling ₹46.41 crore, while in Kolhapur, arrears amount to ₹31.70 lakh among 2.59 lakh consumers. Similarly, in Sangli, 2.16 lakh consumers owe ₹24.10 crore to MSEDCL.

Ankush Nale, the regional director of MSEDCL, has instructed officials to enforce strict measures against defaulters. Consequently, approximately 50,000 connections have been disconnected thus far.

Pune City stands out with the highest arrears, where ₹221.63 crore remains unpaid by 15.86 lakh domestic consumers and ₹67.40 crore by 1.65 lakh commercial consumers.

Expressing concern, Nale remarked, “Despite repeated appeals, consumer compliance remains lacking, severely affecting MSEDCL’s financial stability.”

Furthermore, stringent actions await those found illicitly tapping electricity during inspections.

These pending arrears have inflicted a financial strain on MSEDCL, hindering its operational capabilities. Urgent measures are imperative to mitigate this issue and restore financial equilibrium.
