Pune: Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) plans to introduce electric vehicles to collect waste in the city instead of diesel vehicles.  EKA, an e-vehicle company  presented a vehicle with the capacity to hold 1,200 kilograms of waste to PMC on a trial basis. However, the municipal corporation has asked the company to make a few changes in the e-vehicle model.

A mini truck popularly called ‘Chota Hathi’ is used by PMC to collect waste from the city and carry it to the garbage depot. The mini truck has a system to collect dry and wet waste separately and has a capacity to carry up to 500 kgs.

However, these diesel vehicles are old and so, the municipal corporation plans to use e-vehicles for waste transportation as fuel expenses will also come down.

Hitendra Shamrao Kurane, Executive Engineer of Motor vehicle department said, “We are planning to introduce e-vehicle for waste collection within PMC limits. For this, EKA, an electric vehicle company presented us an illustrative model for seven days.  The trial was held last month and we are awaiting a report from the Central Institute of Road Transport (CIRT), Pune. This e-vehicle can carry waste up to 1200 Kg. After getting the report we will submit the proposal to the PMC Standing Committee.”

“We are planning to use e-vehicle but haven’t made any proposal regarding this. If the motor vehicle department agrees then e-vehicles will be used to collect waste,” said Asha Raut, Deputy Commissioner, Solid Waste Management.
