The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has decided to increase the monthly charges for home-to-home garbage collection starting this year. Residents will now pay Rs 85 per month, up from the previous Rs 80. This change applies to residential areas, while commercial establishments will be charged Rs 170 monthly, and slum households Rs 65. The PMC emphasized the importance of residents handing over segregated waste to authorized collectors to ensure effective management.
PMC officials have also issued a stern warning against waste collectors who demand extra money from residents, following numerous complaints of overcharging. Sandip Kadam, head of the solid waste management department, assured that teams would monitor and promptly address such grievances.
Despite these measures, civic activists have criticized the PMC for separately charging for garbage collection, arguing that it already collects conservancy and general taxes through annual property tax. They urge the administration to focus on improving overall garbage management across the city. Kadam acknowledged the ongoing challenges in garbage collection, especially in recently merged areas, and announced plans to involve additional agencies to enhance service delivery.
Residents expressed concerns not only about home garbage collection but also about the cleanliness of public areas. They called upon the PMC to ensure efficient waste lifting throughout the city.
As Pune strives to improve its waste management systems, the PMC’s decision to raise charges reflects its commitment to enhancing service quality amidst growing urban demands.
