Power Outages Impact 3 Crore Consumers for Over 28,000 Hours by March 2024

Pune, July 17, 2024 – Following a complaint by civic activist Vivek Velankar to the Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission (MERC), the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) promptly published its reliability indices for February and March 2024 on their website.

The data highlights a concerning trend in the Pune zone, a key revenue area for MSEDCL, where power outages have significantly increased. In January 2024, there were 13,001 power outages due to technical failures statewide, affecting 1.72 crore consumers for a total of 23,434 hours. By March 2024, this number rose to 16,442 outages, impacting about three crore consumers for 28,076 hours. In the Pune zone alone, the situation worsened from 687 incidents in January, causing 22 lakh consumers to experience 1,496 hours of outages, to 891 incidents by March, affecting 31 lakh consumers for 2,472 hours.

Velankar emphasized the importance of transparency, stating, “According to MERC rules, MSEDCL must publish the reliability index every month, but they had not posted the numbers on their website since January 2024. Only after filing a complaint was the data uploaded within a few hours. This suggests the details were ready but withheld, revealing the true state of the power utility operations.”

The MSEDCL’s delayed publication raises questions about their operational transparency and commitment to service quality, as the reliability data is crucial for assessing and improving the power distribution network.
