The organs of a 14-year-old girl from Bagni village in Walva tehsil, Sangli district, were donated this weekend, saving three lives and restoring sight to another patient. Approximately eight days prior, a student in the eighth grade collapsed at home due to convulsions. Doctors indicated that the seizures led to a condition where blood accumulated in her brain.

She was taken to a private hospital in Sangli for treatment but remained unconscious. After being declared brain-dead, a doctor treating physician, spoke to her parents about the life-saving potential of organ donation.

After they gave their consent, the donor was brought to the Ushakal Abhinav Hospital in Sangli.

Meanwhile, the doctors from the hospital communicated the decision of the girl’s parents to the Zonal Transplant Coordination Centre (ZTCC) officials. Accordingly, beneficiaries were identified, and the requisite tests were carried out before organ extraction.

“After the necessary steps, we informed the ZTCC authorities to create a green corridor to Pune on Saturday, where patients in a critical condition were awaiting organ transplantation. The corneas of the donor were implanted in a local patient in Sangli,” said the hospital director in Sangli.
