Pune News: PMC To Conduct Structural Audit Of City Statues After Recent CollapseÂ
The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) will undertake a structural audit of over 50 statues across the city following the collapse of a Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj statue in Malvan. The statues, funded by the state government, donations, and corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives, are located in areas including Karve Road, Yerwada, Kasba Peth, Central Peth, Kothrud, Mandai, and Shivajinagar.
Officials from the building designs department have gathered information about these statues, and the audit is set to begin on Monday, September 1.
They have collected details of 50 statues from the municipal secretary’s office. The audit will assess both busts and full statues from a safety and stability perspective. We will ensure that necessary repairs are made and security is maintained.
Until now, PMC has not conducted any structural audits of public statues since their installation. Statues are typically cleaned and painted for anniversaries and special events, but no regular reviews are conducted.
According to existing rules, statues must not be installed on private property without state government permission. They should be placed on non-controversial land, and police clearance is required after thorough checks. For statues on government land, necessary permissions from relevant departments are needed, and the statues must not obstruct traffic movement.
