The heavy downpour on July 24 and July 25 paralysed the entire Pune and Pimpri Municipal Corporation area. Both the cities suffered hugely because of water logging due to poor drainage facilities and largely because of the water discharge from the Khadakwasla dam. The heavy rainfall led to water logging in low lying areas. Many societies reported water logging in their underground basement parking areas. Kalpataru Exquisite society in Kaspate Wasti Wakad area has been without water supply for the last 48 hours. The residents are not only struggling for basic necessities but suffered hugely as the elevators in the buildings had to be shut off as the panels were submerged in the water. The drinking water tanks are also submerged in the water due to heavy rains, contaminating it. The residents are now seeking help from the authorities. They approached Pune Pulse to raise their issues with the authorities.

Khushboo, a resident of the society told Pune Pulse that the residents are living without drinking water, no water in washrooms, parking areas are filled with knee deep water too. There is no help from anywhere. The residents are somehow managing their daily chores. There are senior citizens and many medical emergencies which are unable to tackle as the residents living on the higher floor are finding it inaccessible.

Mane, chairman of Crescendo building from Kalpataru Exquisite society, said that one lift from each building has been activated. But the lift panels are all in the basement area which is flooded and hence for a few hours we had shut down the working of lifts to curb any untowards incident. At this point, we have asked for drinking water supply to the residents and are also trying to empty the water tanks so that fresh water can be filled.

When Pune Pulse spoke to disaster management cell head, Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation he stated that the emergency rescue teams are working relentlessly ever since the heavy downpour affected us. We shall extend all the help to the residents. The residents of the area can also seek help from the private entities to get the water removed from the basement so that the electrical supply can be restored at the earliest.

Deepali Rawat, a resident of the society said the basement parking areas are totally filled with water. There are no lights, lifts aren’t working, no drinking water supply too. Our condition is terrible.

Ankush Jadhav, assistant commissioner, D ward office, PCMC stated that the essential help will be provided to the residents of the area.

When Pune Pulse informed about the critical condition of the society, Rahul Kalate, former corporator of the area assured to extend all possible help to the residents.
