Pune: Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and Pune Smart City are joining forces to implement an Adaptive Traffic Management System (ATMS) aimed at improving traffic flow and reducing congestion in the city. The ATMS will be installed at 125 traffic signals in various corridors, starting from Kothrud to Hadapsar and then to Pune airport road then on SB road and at Satara road.

The ATMS will consist of cameras capable of capturing vehicles up to 200 meters away, as well as signal controllers. The system will automatically adjust signal timings based on the number of vehicles in the queue at each signal, with the goal of easing traffic flow and reducing delays.

Sanjay Kolte, CEO of Pune Smart City, stated, “We will be installing the system at 125 signals in the city in phases. The aim of this system is to have effective traffic management. Not only this, but through these cameras, vehicles violating traffic rules will also be detected, and the system will be integrated with the traffic department.”

The implementation of the ATMS is expected to be carried out in phases, with the first phase focusing on corridors from Kothrud to Hadapsar, and from the airport to Statara road. The system will be installed at each signal along these corridors, enabling real-time monitoring and management of traffic flow.

The ATMS is expected to bring several benefits to the city of Pune. By optimizing signal timings based on actual traffic conditions, it can help reduce congestion, shorten travel times, and improve overall traffic efficiency. The system’s cameras will also enable the detection of traffic rule violations, providing valuable data to the traffic department for enforcement and planning purposes.

The implementation of the ATMS is part of Pune’s ongoing efforts to transform into a smart city by leveraging technology for improved urban management. The collaboration between PMC and Pune Smart City reflects a proactive approach towards using innovative solutions to address the growing traffic challenges faced by the city.
