Pune: Bavdhan residents are in distress due to alcohol consumption and dumping bottles in the open spaces. As a result, excessive litter of the bottles takes place due to it.

Speaking to Pune Pulse, CS Krishnan, Resident & Core Member of Bavdhan Citizens’ Forum, Bavdhan said, “Bavdhan has about 6 shops that sell liquor. Most of the shops are located around Bavdhan Tekdi along the dark spots, Shinde Commercial Complex car park, and along NDA Pashan Road. These places are littered with broken liquor bottles. Due to this, pigs have started to enter these spaces between Shinde Nagar Lane 3 to Natural Ice Cream on NDA Pashan Road. As of now, there is not much patrolling by the police. But I request the police officials to start patrolling as drunkards are creating a menace. Also, the authorities of Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) should clean the area soon.”.

Ketan Waman, Resident of Bavdhan area said, “The empty alcohol bottles & beer cans start piling up every day even after cleaning the streets. Police should patrol the entire area as people go to the hillside and drink every day due to which the alcohol waste issue has started for some time now.”

Roopa Baliga, Resident of the Bavdhan area said, “I live near NDA Pashan road in Bavdhan. Every day, several people gather & consume alcohol during night time. After drinking, people throw bottles & cans at the same place which adds to the already piled-up garbage dump. There is no control by the authorities in the area. Due to this, various places in Bavdhan have become unsafe for women and kids.”

Shashank Wartikar, Resident, of Blue Hill Society, Bavdhan said, “People are drinking at the entrance of our building. They either drink openly near the entrance or sit inside the rickshaws parked near the entrance or while sitting in their cars. The opposite side of Lantana Garden has become an open-air drinking area. After drinking, they litter the area with bottles and plastic glasses. One can even find broken bottles on the road. It is a risk for the ladies, elderly people and people in the area as they drive dangerously after drinking. There are broken bottles with scattered pieces of glass. People after drinking also urinate without caring if the ladies are passing by.”

Pune Pulse tried contacting the Solid Waste Management Official of the PMC but couldn’t connect till the filing of this report.

Ganesh Kharage, Beat Marshal Incharge, Hinjewadi Police Station said, “Our patrolling constables & teams constantly patrol & monitor all the hillside areas & open areas of Bavdhan every day. Currently, due to a lack of manpower, not every hillside or every open area can be monitored simultaneously. However, we are planning to ask for more constables to make monitoring more effective.”
