Pune: Vegetable prices have gone up in Pune city due to heavy rains which have damaged a lot of crops.

As a result, the supply has decreased leading to an increase in the prices of the vegetables in Pune.

Speaking to Pune Pulse, Maithili Manakawad, Resident of Wanowrie said, ” Around 10- 15 days back, the prices of vegetables were Rs 10-15 for 250 grams. The same has increased to Rs 20 -25. I think this is because of the rains as we have heard the news that many crops were damaged due to heavy rains in Pune and around. I hope that the prices will become normal by the winter season.”

Sangeeta Natekar, Resident of Sahakar Nagar said, ” The prices of vegetables 10 to 15 days before were Rs 20 to 25 for 250 grams. However, the rate has almost doubled toRs 40 to 45 for 250 grams.”

Monika Sharma, Resident of NIBM Road said, ” We buy around 10 to 15 vegetables & fruits. Around 15 days ago, the total cost for buying everything cost us Rs 2000. Now, it has doubled for purchasing the same quantity.”

Swapna Aserkar, Resident of Sahakar Nagar said, “I can clearly see the difference in the prices of vegetables from the past 1 month as the price for various vegetables has gone up by at least Rs 10 to 20 per 250 grams.”

Mahadev Muglay, vegetable vendor at Erandwane said, “The prices of many vegetables like cauliflower, ladies finger (bhendi) etc have gone up. About 10 days back, we used to buy vegetables at around Rs 40 to 50/kg from the Market Yard. Now, we buy them at Rs 60 to 80/kg. The business has also decreased due to this price rise.”

Shrirang Raut, a vegetable vendor at Prabhat Road said, ” I have a small vegetable shop. Due to the price rise, the business has reduced considerably. It is getting difficult for me to manage two meals every day.”

Dinesh Jagade, another vegetable vendor in Sahakar Nagar said, “The prices of some vegetables have increased by 40% and some have increased by 20% in the last 15 to 20 days. The profit margin has also reduced considerably. There is no effect on selling of the vegetables but the quantities have decreased.  For example, a customer who used to purchase 1 kilogram of tomato is now taking half a kg due to the price rise.”

Aniruddha Bhosale, Director, APMC Pune, said “Due to heavy rains, several crops have been damaged. So, the supply of vegetables is not much. Mostly, farmers have sown seeds of new crops now which will grow in about 1 to 2 months after which there will be an increase in supply & the prices will then be normalized again.”
