Pune: The fish and butcher trade association has demanded to set up a separate market yard to provide healthy and fresh fish to the customers just like the vegetable market yard in Gultekdi.

The demand follows against the background of the Gultekdi market committee to start the fish market which was strongly opposed by various people in the market yard and people from the Jain community. Hence, the association is demanding to set up an independent fish market in a separate place.

A fish and butcher trade association member said that non-vegetarian food does not suit certain communities. However, consumption of fish is good for the health of people. Hence, it is necessary to have a separate market yard in Pune for fish. However, the fish market yard should be constructed at places other than the Gultekdi vegetable market yard so that no caste or religious sentiments will be hurt.

The association member further said that presently, the fish market in Ganesh Peth & other fish markets running outside the city cannot maintain fishes due to a lack of proper facilities like cold storage and more. Hence, to have a proper trade of healthy fishes in Pune with proper facilities to maintain fish, setting up an integrated fish market yard in the city must happen.

A demand proposal in this regard has been submitted on behalf of the association to the Department of Fisheries of the state government.
