September 6, 2024
The Defence Institute of Advanced Technology (DIAT) in Pune will soon start specialized training for “cyber commandos,” who will be law enforcement officers under the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA). DIAT has been recognized as one of the ten training centers in India for this program. On Thursday, DIAT vice-chancellor Dr. BHVS Narayana Murthy discussed ongoing and upcoming research and academic activities, including the upcoming thirteenth convocation on September 7, which will be attended by DRDO chairman Dr. Samir V Kamat.
Murthy informed the media about various academic programs, stating, “We have been training young scientists at DRDO. Soon, we will launch an MTech program for newly recruited scientists, allowing them to earn an MTech degree while working with DRDO—one year at DIAT and one year at their respective DRDO labs. We also offer several customized short-term courses for young executives from public sector undertakings and other organizations. Our computer science department has a popular online course in cyber security.”
He added, “The Ministry of Home Affairs has expressed interest in training cyber commandos and has identified 10 institutes, including DIAT, for this six-month cyber security course.”
Manisha Nene, head of the Computer Science and Engineering department at DIAT, announced that the cyber commando training course will begin in November and will be residential. The trainees will be law enforcement officers, and the course will cover advanced topics such as systems forensics, detecting and preventing unauthorized system access, and investigating cyber crimes, consisting of 12 modules.
Murthy added that DIAT has been ranked 63rd in the engineering category by the National Institutional Ranking Framework this year and aims to improve its ranking further, targeting a position within the top 50. Currently, DIAT offers specialized courses for officers from the Defence wing of Larsen & Toubro, with plans to expand these offerings to other major industry players and public sector undertakings, focusing on skill development to support the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative.
