Pune: The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has commenced a special enforcement campaign to ensure the quality and safety of nutraceuticals and health supplements in compliance with regulations set by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI).

The FDA has been conducting inspections of shops selling dietary supplements and nutraceutical products in various areas of Maharashtra to verify their licenses and labeling compliance.

According to Arjun Bhujbal, the joint commissioner of FDA (food) Pune region, the inspections have been initiated to tackle non-compliance with regulations and false health claims associated with nutraceuticals and health supplements in the market. So far, the FDA has inspected several shops in areas such as Ambegaon, Narhe, Hadapsar and Sadashiv Peth, among others, checking their licenses, products, and product labels to ensure compliance with regulations.

Bhujbal confirmed that all the inspected shops have been found to have the necessary licenses and proper labeling as per the norms. However, violators found selling supplements with false and exaggerated health claims could face fines of up to Rs10 lakhs as per the FSSAI regulations.

The market for nutraceuticals in India, including Pune, has witnessed significant growth in recent years, particularly during the Covid-19 pandemic, leading to an increase in the number of shops selling such products in major cities. This campaign by the Maharashtra FDA aims to ensure that consumers have access to safe and quality nutraceuticals and health supplements in the market.
