Pune: The newly opened vegetable and fruit market in Sai Chowk, Balewadi has become home to antisocial elements who drink alcohol and are also involved in various illegal activities.

Speaking to Pune Pulse, Ameya Jagtap, Member of Balewadi Welfare Federation said,  “It has been 3 to 4 months since the vegetable and fruit market was opened for business. However, instead of being used as a vegetable market, the marketplace has become an open den to consume alcohol, create menace and dump everyday garbage here etc. People who sell balloons also put their shops here. No security is there for the safety of this place. A lot of taxis & cabs are parked here without permission. The irony is that the everyday vegetable & fruit market is placed on the footpath outside this space which is very unhygienic. We have sent a lot of letters & requests to the Pune Municipal Corporation. However, they are ignoring this as we have not received a single response from them.”

Suresh Borse, Deputy Engineer, Smart City Pune, said, “The work of building the marketplace has been done by the Smart City. Our responsibility was only till building this marketplace on the allotted land. Now, the municipal administration has to take care of everything henceforth.”

Pune Pulse tried contacting the relevant PMC official, however, couldn’t connect with them till the filing of this report.
