Pune, August 30, 2024 – The Mohammadwadi – Undri Residents Welfare Development Foundation (MURWDF), a registered organization dedicated to the welfare of residents in the Mohammadwadi and Undri areas, has submitted a detailed proposal to Atul Gadgil, Director (Works) of Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited, advocating for the inclusion of their locality in the Pune Metro’s Comprehensive Mobility Plan (CMP) 2024.
The MURWDF highlights that the Mohammadwadi-Undri area is home to a diverse population, including retired Armed Forces personnel, government officials, IT professionals, and business entrepreneurs. With over 50,000 housing units and a growing population of 2.5 lakh, the area is rapidly expanding with ongoing residential projects. Despite this growth, the locality remains poorly connected to Pune’s public transport network.
The proposal outlines the current and planned metro alignments by both MahaMetro and PMRDA, pointing out the overlapping routes and the technical challenges posed by different signaling systems. To address these issues and improve connectivity for Wanawadi, Kondhwa, Undri, and Mohammadwadi, the residents propose extending PMRDA’s Line 3 from Racecourse towards Wanawadi and Kondhwa, instead of Hadapsar and Loni Kalbhor.
The suggested extension would provide metro access to densely populated areas including Pune Cantt, Salunke Vihar, NIBM, and Kausar Baug. The MURWDF emphasizes that this belt has been historically neglected in terms of public transport, making the proposed metro connectivity vital for the area’s integration into the city’s broader transport network.
The residents urge that their proposal be seriously considered and implemented in a phased manner, ensuring that the growing population of Mohammadwadi-Undri is not further burdened by inadequate public transportation options.
