Efforts to extend the metro route from Pimpri to Bhakti-Shakti Chowk in Nigdi have gained momentum, with Shiv Sena MP Shrirang Barne revealing significant developments.

The eagerly anticipated proposal for extending the metro up to Nigdi has reached the Union Urban Development Minister, Hardeep Singh Puri, who has expressed a commitment to approve the plan within the forthcoming week.

Srirang Barne, the Maval MP from Shiv Sena, conveyed that the path has been paved for the metro’s expansion to Nigdi following his discussions with Minister Hardeep Singh Puri. This news comes as a welcome advancement, aligning with the aspirations of the local populace.

Initially, the metro line extended from Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipality to Phugewadi. Presently, the construction of the 13.9 km stretch from Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipality to District Court is in progress. However, citizens have voiced their preference for the metro to extend further to Nigdi, rather than stopping at Pimpri.

Addressing these demands, the state government presented a proposal for the metro’s extension to Nigdi to the central government. In a crucial meeting at the Parliament House, Srirang Barne implored Minister Hardeep Singh Puri for prompt approval of the Nigdi extension. Minister Puri responded affirmatively, pledging to grant his approval within the next seven days.

Highlighting the imperative nature of this metro expansion, Srirang Barne emphasized the rapid urbanization and substantial growth in population and employment that Pimpri-Chinchwad has experienced over the last two decades. With the population projected to reach 30.9 lakh by 2028 and 39.1 lakh by 2038, the need for improved transport infrastructure is pressing.

The proposed extension from Pimpri Municipality to Nigdi encompasses a 4.13 km elevated corridor, incorporating three stations: Chinchwad, Akurdi, and Nigdi. The financial burden of this extension will be equally shared between the central government and the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation, with an estimated cost of Rs 910.18 crore.

A swift approval of this proposal holds immense significance in augmenting transport infrastructure, mitigating traffic congestion, and enhancing connectivity for the residents of Pimpri-Chinchwad.

The assuring commitment from Minister Hardeep Singh Puri to expedite the approval process signifies a significant step toward realizing the long-held aspiration of extending the metro service to Nigdi.
