Pune News : Now, students can visit prisons for study purposesĀ

Pune: Maharashtra state prison department announced that, now students and university scholars can apply for prison to visit prisons for research purposes.

In a circular dated by 1 March it was mentioned that recognised institutes, government approved colleges and universities can apply for the permission to visit prisons for study purposes. However it was also mentioned that photography is not allowed inside prison and no one should not directly contact prisoners.Considering all security measures respective jail authority can grant permission to visit prisons.

Institutes like Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Maharashtra Institute of Mental Health, Sassoon General Hospital now can study in detail challenges faced by prisoners in association with the state prison department.

Amitabh Gupta, additional director general of police, Prison and Corrections Services said, “We have decided to allow a maximum of 35 students to visit prison for study purposes.These studies not only helps to study emotional and mental aspect of the prisoners but also helps to get information about their rehabilitation.ā€™ā€™

According to Gupta this initiative helps students to get opportunities to get knowledge which will help them during their academics. Outcomes of such study, research reports will definitely help to bring reforms at the prison department.
