PUNE: To address the increasing instances of fraudulent marriage agencies and prevent underage marriages, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has implemented a new directive making it mandatory for newly married couples to officially register their marriages within 90 days. Additionally, marriage bureaus are required to register their firms with local ward offices every two years. This initiative aims to bring transparency to the process, ensuring the legitimacy of unions and preventing misuse of legal documentation.

The registration process:

According to a PMC health department official responsible for overseeing marriage registrations, couples must submit all necessary documents along with ‘Form A’ and pay a registration fee of Rs 2,000. Moreover, the PMC has introduced a biennial renewal requirement for the Marriage Board Registration Certificate, which begins from the issuance date. All required documents must be verified at the relevant field office one day before the scheduled appointment.

As per the Marriage Registration Act, either the bride or groom must be a resident within the Pune Municipal Corporation’s jurisdiction to facilitate marriage registration. The application form for the marriage memorandum (Form D) must be filed within 90 days of the wedding date. The groom must present the form in person to the registrar, accompanied by three witnesses. It is crucial to note that any delay in document submission will result in penalties, and the marriage memorandum will only be considered once all necessary document requirements are fulfilled.

The main objective of this initiative is to precisely monitor the marriages taking place in the city while preventing the misuse of documents and fraudulent unions involving underage individuals.
