Wagholi, September 2, 2024 — Rohan Abhilasha F CHS, a residential society in Wagholi, has taken a groundbreaking step towards sustainability with the commissioning of a 90 kW solar power project on May 12, 2024. This ambitious initiative not only marks a significant achievement for the society but also sets a new standard for environmental responsibility and financial prudence in the community.
The newly installed solar panels are expected to save approximately 8,000 kg of CO2 equivalent each month, which is comparable to planting 2,000 trees. This substantial reduction in carbon emissions underscores the society’s commitment to contributing positively to the environment. Additionally, the project will result in monthly savings of around ₹2,25,000 on electricity bills, providing much-needed financial relief to the residents.
Despite the society’s relatively young age and initial lack of funds for such a major investment, the new Managing Committee (MCM), which assumed responsibility in September 2023, was determined to make the project a reality. Through persistent efforts and detailed negotiations, the MCM secured a financial arrangement that allowed the society to install the solar panels without paying the full cost upfront. Instead, the society will make manageable monthly payments for the equipment.
The financial benefits from the solar project have proven invaluable. They have enabled the society to manage its operations efficiently without increasing maintenance fees, even in the face of rising inflation and a 7-8% annual increase in electricity costs from MSEDCL. The savings are also supporting new initiatives, such as the installation of CCTV cameras to enhance the security of the society.
The path to implementation was not entirely smooth. The project faced opposition from a few residents with vested interests who attempted to hinder its progress. However, the MCM’s steadfast determination and support of majority residents to the project ensured its successful completion despite these challenges.
The support from Modi government policies played a crucial role in facilitating this project. The favorable policies helped streamline the clearance process, allowing the society to navigate regulatory requirements smoothly and efficiently.
