Pune, 13 July 2024: The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has announced the construction of a new pedestrian overbridge at Chandni Chowk, set to begin next month. The project, now in its final stages of contract negotiations, has been awarded to the Kolhapur-based company MD Infra.

The 100-meter iron overbridge will connect the new Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) bus stand at Chandni Chowk to Irani Cafe in Bavdhan. The initiative aims to significantly improve pedestrian safety in the area, which has been a point of concern for local media and commuters alike.

Pune Pulse has been in the forefront in highlighting the issues raised by the local residents, especially around the safety concerns.

Currently, pedestrians face the arduous task of walking three kilometers or paying over Rs 100 for a rickshaw to cross the highway. The new overbridge will reduce this journey to a five-minute walk, enhancing convenience and safety for daily commuters.

Union Minister of State Murdhir Mohol has been actively advocating for the project, recently urging the Minister of Road Transport and Highways of India, Nitin Gadkari, to expedite its construction. This move underscores the government’s commitment to addressing pedestrian safety and improving infrastructure at Chandni Chowk.
