A violent confrontation inside a residential society in Pune’s Kothrud area ended in tragedy on Saturday night when a 23-year-old man was allegedly beaten to death by members of a family who suspected him of harassing their minor daughter. Police have since arrested six relatives, including five women, in connection with the incident.

Officers from the Kothrud Police Station confirmed that the victim, identified as Nagesh Sanjay Jadhav from Wadarwadi, was attacked around 8 pm. The young man was employed as an office boy at a company in Shivajinagar.

Senior inspector Sandeep Deshmane told investigators that the accused believed Jadhav had been following and troubling their underage daughter. Acting on this suspicion, they allegedly decided to confront him and “teach him a lesson,” which ultimately led to the fatal assault.

“We have arrested the minor girl’s family members and their relatives, all of whom do odd jobs, for allegedly kicking and punching the victim to death. The suspects also assaulted him with a stick,” Deshmane said. The case came to light after Nagesh’s mother, 45-year-old Surekha Jadhav, who works as a domestic helper in the Market Yard area, approached the police late on Saturday night to file a complaint. Nagesh was her only child.

Explaining the sequence of events, Deshmane said, “According to the complaint, around 7.15 pm, Surekha and her son were at home when he received a call.”

He added that after receiving the call, Nagesh started his motorcycle and left the house.

“About 8 pm, Surekha received another call. A man informed her that he and his relatives had beaten her son and told her to come and take him home,” Deshmane said.

Alarmed by the call, Surekha and several relatives rushed to the housing society mentioned by the caller. When they arrived, they found Nagesh lying injured on the ground. The family immediately took him to a private hospital on Senapati Bapat Road.

Doctors there advised them to shift him to Sassoon General Hospital for advanced treatment. However, by the time he reached Sassoon, doctors declared him dead, noting that he had sustained severe internal injuries during the assault.

Police also clarified that the girl’s family had never previously lodged any complaint about the alleged harassment. Addressing the matter, Deshmane said, “The family did not approach the police on this issue. But this does not mean that the girl’s family members can take the law into their hands.”

Investigators have registered a murder case against the six accused, and further inquiry into the circumstances leading to the deadly confrontation is ongoing.
