A Metro pillar constructed in front of Hotel Mahabaleshwar on Baner Road has become a major obstacle for daily commuters, leading to regular traffic jams. The Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) is building two pillars for the Shivajinagar-Hinjewadi Metro line, with one pillar situated in the middle of the road and the other near the road, on the bank of Ram Nadi.

The reduced carriageway, narrowed to a single lane due to the pillar construction, is causing difficulties for area residents and motorists. Commuters are frustrated with the frequent traffic congestion, particularly during peak hours. “We regularly get stuck in traffic while heading towards University junction near Mahabaleshwar Hotel. The traffic police must do something to curb the chaos,” said Mukund Yamal, an Aundh resident.

Senior PMRDA officials explained that the pillar’s placement was carefully considered to avoid interfering with the Ram Nadi riverbank and existing culvert abutment. “Utility lines and right-of-way restrictions at the site were also taken into account. Dismantling and relocating the completed pier is not possible due to lack of alternative locations within the right-of-way,” they stated.

However, the city traffic police have received numerous complaints about the traffic congestion and have written to PMRDA officials to address the issue. Pune Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar and Additional Commissioner Manoj Patil have also urged PMRDA to find a solution. “The reduced carriage width of 7.5 meters between the two pillars is causing traffic jams. We request PMRDA to look into the matter to prevent permanent damage to mobility on the road,” Patil revealed while communicating with media.

A recent site visit revealed that work on pillar ’16GL’ has been halted due to unknown reasons. Workers at the site stated, “We don’t know what the issue is.” As the traffic chaos continues, commuters and authorities alike await a resolution to this pressing issue.

The situation highlights the need for coordination between PMRDA and traffic authorities to ensure that infrastructure development does not compromise road safety and mobility.
