A mass citizens movement was held in Wanowrie today by Wanowrie Nagrik Kruti Samiti which saw participation of more than 200 residents who protested against issues such as unauthorized hoardings, vegetable vendors, food stalls, unauthorized tree cutting that have become a nuisance around Samvidhan chowk.

The protest saw attendance of various residents from Flower Valley, Green Valley, Sacred Heart Town, Raheja Garden, Azad Nagar, Shanti Nagar and many other societies.

“The empty space at Samvidhan chowk is owned by various families in Wanowrie, whereas the Shivarkar road’s eastern side, western side has been reserved as a play ground, southern side from Kedari petrol pump to Swiss Bakes coffee shop is reserved as HCMTR route and parking. The illegal hoardings have come up in the reserved spaces which is raising concerns among people. There are various food stalls, garages, vegetable vendors who have set up their businesses on these plots and have also become a dumping zone for construction debris which is coming from other parts of Pune city. If this is not stopped now, Flower Valley, Green Valley, Sacred Heart Town, Jagtap chowk Nancy Tower will have water entering their premises,” informed Prashant Jagtap, former Wanowrie corporator.

A memorandum was also submitted to Sham Taru, assistant commisisoner, Wanawadi Ramtekdi ward office, appealing him to take stern action against the illegal activities after the protest was over.

A resident of Green Valley informed that it is an eye sore to see this kind of menace everyday. The open space has become a hotspot for drunkards who often cause chaos. The place should be kept empty and free from any sort of encroachments.

Another resident from Raheja Garden complained that ten years ago this plot was empty and never saw any encroachments. But in the last ten years, all sorts of illegal businesses have taken over the place causing nuisance to the local residents. Women and senior citizens don’t feel safe to walk in the area as drunkards have made the empty space their home in the evening.

Jagtap in his statement stated that we are not against any family. But the illegal businesses should not come on the reserved spaces which are earmarked in the Development Plan. Wanowrie’s clean and green status must be retained. The residents of the area must not be fooled by giving them false promises and misguiding them.
