Pune: Phulrani Toy Train At Peshwe Park Marks 70 Years, Remains A Timeless Favourite
Pune, April 8, 2026: Pune’s iconic toy train ‘Phulrani’, popularly known as the “Flower Queen,” completed 70 years on Wednesday, drawing crowds to Peshwe Park as residents celebrated the enduring attraction.
A cherished ride for children and a nostalgic experience for older generations, the miniature train continues to wind its way through lush greenery, tunnels, and curved tracks near the Sarasbaug Ganpati Temple. During summer vacations, it remains a top attraction for children from Pune and nearby areas, while many elderly visitors return with their grandchildren to relive fond memories.

The train was first introduced on April 8, 1956, by the Pune Municipal Corporation to entertain visitors. The concept was inspired by similar children’s rail rides promoted across the country with encouragement from Jawaharlal Nehru. Over the decades, ‘Phulrani’ has grown into a cultural landmark of the city.
In a unique gesture at the time, the inaugural ride was flagged off by a four-and-a-half-year-old girl, Vasundhara Dange, in the presence of noted social reformer Dhondo Keshav Karve, highlighting the emphasis placed on children’s recreation.
The train’s journey has closely followed the evolution of Peshwe Park. Initially managed by the civic body’s garden department, the park later came under state control in 2012 during the development of an energy park. After the project concluded, the PMC regained management and revitalised the space with new play areas, restoring its appeal along with the beloved toy train.
Officials said ‘Phulrani’ continues to operate with the same charm, offering joy to new generations while preserving a legacy that has entertained Pune residents for seven decades.
