It seems that road digging in Pune will continue until the end of May 2023 due to the approval of proposals for digging roads of a total length of 328 km by various private and government companies.

This may cause inconvenience and trouble for citizens and motorists, especially during the rainy season, as the process of restoring the roads is likely to take place during that time.

To address the issue of scientific manner of road construction work after completing laying of pipelines, the Road Department of the Municipal Corporation has made some guidelines for road excavation, including submitting proposals, inspecting sites, obtaining permission from the traffic department, and following technical criteria. The works are expected to be completed before monsoon, and efforts will be made to ensure that citizens are not disturbed during the rainy season.

As the municipal administration has given permission to various private and government companies to lay service channels, there is a possibility that road digging will continue this year also during the rainy season.

Proposals of government companies along with private companies are approved for laying various service channels. Municipal water supply, road department, sewerage department along with various works are done by field offices.

Accordingly, till 31st March 2023, digging of roads of a total length of 328 km has been approved. These works are still ongoing. Apart from that, road digging is going on in some parts of the city to lay new water channels under the same water supply scheme. As per the rules, the road digging works are expected to be completed by May 15. But most of the work is still pending at many locations in Pune.

The Road Department of the Municipal Corporation has made some guidelines for road excavation. The proposal should be submitted showing the work to be done on the left or right side of the road by lengthening the last of the work. The Deputy Engineer should inspect the site and determine the route of the service channels. If the road defect is within the defect liability period, road excavation should not be allowed. It has been clarified by the road department that the permission of the traffic department should be taken as per the tracing policy. Apart from this some criteria of technical method have also been fixed.

“Road digging will not be allowed after 15 May. After digging the road, the process of restoring it will be taken up immediately. The relevant authorities have also been informed. The works will be completed before monsoon. Care will be taken to ensure that citizens are not disturbed during the rainy season,” informed a senior PMC official from the road department.
