Pune: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) in collaboration with NGOs, has taken the initiative to address the issue of waste accumulation during festivals such as Dussehra and Diwali.

In line with the principles of reduce, reuse, and recycle (RRR), it is imperative to collect and manage these discarded household items, including mattresses, pillows, and furniture, to prevent them from becoming waste.

The collected items were then sorted and segregated based on their condition and usability. The collection drive was organized to specifically collect rags, pillows, mattresses, and furniture.

As per the information received, two collection centers were set up in each ward across 91 locations. The collection took place between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., and the collected items were subsequently transported to the designated facility. The 91 collection centers have been established under the supervision of fifteen regional offices. Detailed information about these centers can be found on the Pune Municipal Corporation’s official website and social media platforms.

To ensure maximum participation, extensive public awareness campaigns were conducted, targeting citizens, committee members, and NGOs. The Pune Municipal Corporation also appealed to the public to actively participate in this initiative. A significant amount of waste was collected, including 4168 kg of rags, 269 pillows weighing 701 kg, 492 items of furniture weighing 9188 kg, and 260 kg of e-waste.

Vikram Kumar, PMC Commissioner Dr. Kunal Khemnar, Additional Commissioner (E), and Sandip Kadam, Deputy Commissioner were present during the collection drive to oversee the process.

Later, the collected items were carefully sorted and segregated based on their condition and usability. The Pune Municipal Corporation and its partners will now proceed with the necessary steps to reduce, reuse, and recycle these materials, thereby minimizing waste and promoting sustainable practices.
