Pune: PMC Launches Ambitious "Deep Clean" Drive, Clears 40 Tonnes Of Garbage
In a massive cleanliness drive, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) removed approximately 40 tonnes of dry, wet, and garden waste from several areas in the city, including Dhole Patil Road, Pune station, Bundgarden Road, Maldhakka Chowk, RTO, and Sangam Bridge.
The “deep clean” drive, which began on Monday, involved over 640 staffers from various departments, including road cleaning squads and workers from the solid waste management department. The drive is set to be extended to all areas in a phased manner over the next few weeks.
In addition to clearing waste, the PMC also undertook other civic works, such as clearing 1,500 metres of unattended cables, repairing streetlight poles, and cleaning drainage chambers at 19 locations. The anti-encroachment department also confiscated illegal handcarts and lifted unattended vehicles parked on the roadside.
PMC officials stated that strict instructions have been issued to monitor chronic spots in the area and impose fines on offenders who dump garbage on the roadside or along rivers.
While the drive has been welcomed by citizens, some have expressed concerns that the PMC needs to conduct such drives on a continuous basis to maintain the city’s cleanliness.
