After waiting over four years, the installation of two lifts at Pune Railway Station is nearing completion, and they are expected to be operational at platform numbers 1 and 6 by January 2025.

Indu Dubey, the Pune railway divisional manager, mentioned that the lifts will greatly benefit the thousands of passengers using the station daily. Additionally, work on two more lifts is ongoing, and they should be ready within the next six months.

Passengers have long requested lifts at all platforms for easier access, particularly for the elderly and children. In 2022, a survey by Pune railway division officials led to a proposal for four lifts to be approved by the railway headquarters. The plan includes one lift at platform 1, one between platforms 2 and 3, another between platforms 4 and 5, and one at platform 6 near the Pune Metro Station. Earlier this year, the railway board allocated funds for these installations, and the lifts will be introduced in phases, with the first two expected to be operational by January 2025.

The central foot-overbridge (FOB) at Pune Railway Station has been shut down for public use since cracks were discovered. In contrast, the newer FOB, which was initiated in 2019, is wider and connects all six platforms. There’s also an FOB built in 2015 at the Solapur end that only connects platforms 1, 2, and 3. Additionally, there are two older FOBs at the Mumbai end, with only one accessible from the Raja Bahadur Road side.
