Pune: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is considering a proposal to transfer ownership of land currently used by government departments such as police chowkis, post offices, and electricity boards. Instead of continuing to collect nominal rents, the PMC plans to adjust these dues against the cost of the land as part of its Development Plan.

The PMC originally owned these plots and had allotted them to various state and central government agencies for essential public services. Now, the civic body seeks to formally transfer ownership to streamline operations and reduce financial burdens.

Deputy Commissioner Mahesh Patil of the PMC estate department confirmed the proposal. “We are exploring the possibility of transferring ownership to departments occupying these lands. Preliminary discussions are underway, and we will review all aspects before making a final decision,” Patil said.

For instance, in the case of Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL), the PMC plans to offset electricity dues against the land’s cost. Officials believe such adjustments could result in substantial savings for the civic body.

The PMC has struggled to collect rent and taxes from these departments, while also incurring costs for utilities and other services. A senior official explained, “Although the Development Plan reserves land for public services, PMC doesn’t receive adequate compensation from these departments. We are also considering exchanging these plots for alternative lands owned by these agencies.”

By transferring ownership, the PMC aims to reduce expenses, ensure efficient resource allocation, and simplify administrative processes. If approved, this approach could lead to significant cost savings while supporting government services across Pune.
