The work on the Equal Water Supply Scheme undertaken to supply water to the city in an equitable manner is expected to be completed this year after an extension of time. Pune Municipal Commissioner, Administrator Vikram Kumar has claimed that the works of this scheme will be completed soon after which the scheme will be implemented.

Speaking to Pune Pulse, Nandkishor Jagtap, Chief Engineer, PMC Water Supply Department, said “Around 75% work of the water supply scheme is done. Mainly, the works of transmission lines, which supply water to the tanks, at the places where private properties, huge structures & other obstructions etc are left which are being worked upon. The work at places where there was a clear scope, without any problems or hindrances, has been completed. Also, the work in the Hadapsar area is getting a bit delayed due to some reasons. However, all these pending water supply scheme works will be completed in this financial year.”

As per further information, the Municipal Corporation has undertaken this scheme of 2.5 thousand crores to supply water to all parts of the city in an equitable manner, as well as to eliminate leakages and errors in distribution. This plan was approved in 2015. However, the actual work of the scheme started in 2018 due to the appointment of consultants, detailed project planning of the scheme. After that, the work is expected to be completed in the next five years. But after the work of the scheme started, the scheme was hit by the coronavirus. Therefore, instead of April 2023, the scheme was extended till November 2023. Even after that, the work of the scheme has been stopped.

At present, the works of 56 zones out of 141 zones have been completed. The works of 960 km long water channels have been completed and 1 lakh 45 thousand water meters have been installed. There are difficulties in doing work in zone number four. However, the PMC commissioner expressed that the deadline has been extended to complete the work of the project and the work will be completed by the end of July.
