On 1st March 2024, the Pune Municipal Corporation has begun demolishing 40 unauthorized shops & 10 illegal bungalows near High Energy Materials Research Laboratory (HEMRL) in Sutarwadi.

Speaking to Pune Pulse, Sunil Kadam, Deputy Engineer, PMC, said “We have begun the demolition drive out of which half the shops i.e. 20 unauthorized shops, will be removed today (1st March).”

As a result of the Bombay High Court’s strict stance against unauthorized building in defense establishments’ restricted areas, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) moved quickly to demolish at least 40 shops and 10 bungalows that had come up in the restricted area from the High Energy Materials Research Laboratory’s (HEMRL) boundary wall in Sutarwadi.

Near the Mumbai-Bangalore bypass and in the HEMRL restricted area, up to forty furniture stores have opened. The PMC started taking legal action against ten of them in November of last year, they filed a case in high court to the civic body action.

The said construction falls under the restricted area of ​​the Defense Department, HEMRL. Due to this furniture mall, there was traffic stress on the highway. Complaints were made from HEMRL regarding this.
